Te Ataarangi

Rumaki Reo class at Whare manaaki brings together a diverse group of people with different levels of experience and backgrounds all with a commitment to learning the language and art of te reo Māori.

It is striking is how far from a classic environment the learning style is with the wairua being a huge contributing factor to this

One of our commitments is to make space to only speak te reo Māori. Miriama and Whakataerangi create a safe learning environment that caters to the varying levels or te reo Māori capabilities in the group.

Class starts with karakia and waiata and includes waiata-ā-ringa. These practices are a great way to loosen up our wairua and get ourselves ready to learn. We also practice simple phrases, group mahi and working with flash cards and rakau.

We create a Marae like environment with shared kai and active participation in looking after one another and our whare – everyone muscles in. Participants offer a koha in exchange for the learning opportunity. We have received great feedback from tauira of this kaupapa and look forward to continuing our learning together.
